Europe-Russia relations at the universities of Louvain
The first chair initiated by the InBev-Baillet Latour Fund, the KULeuven/UCL Europe-Russia Chair was created in the beginning of 2000. Inaugurated by Mikhaïl Gorbatchev, it aims to stimulate multidisciplinary research of the relations between the European Union and Russia. Its main research focus is the analysis of the origins, determinants and possible evolution of Euro-Russian relations. This initiative was taken based on the conviction that these relations will be of major importance for the European Union over the coming decades and that they are not sufficiently covered today. The research covers various disciplines as to involve and appeal to a broad public. In the first stage, the Chair covers magisterial courses. It also organises a cycle of conferences, followed by seminars for students and researchers, as well as a high-level symposium on a theme of current interest every year. The academic world, as well as political actors find in these events an opportunity to pool their knowledge of Euro-Russian relations, particularly from the point of view of international relations and history. Alongside these regular events, the Chair carries out ongoing research within each institute. In this way, it strives to constitute a pole of interest and encourage research into the subject. With this in mind, a Prize of the InBev-Baillet Latour Chair has been instituted to reward the best dissertation on Euro-Russian relations in each university every two years. To encourage co-operation between the two universities, the Chair works primarily in French and Dutch. English and Russian can also be used in certain circumstances. As from the 2003-2004 academic year, the InBev-Baillet Latour Fund has added to the Chair two scholarships at PhD level (one for the KUL and the other for the UCL), intended for two Russian researchers working on a subject linked to the relations between the European Union and Russia. Partner Institutes The InBev-Baillet Latour Europe-Russia Chair is based on co-operation between the Institute of European Studies of the Université Catholique de Louvain and the Institute for International and European Policy of the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven. All activities are managed jointly by these two Institutes Facts 07/06/2006 Since 2000 the InBev-Baillet Latour "European Union-Russia" University Chair has focused on the growing importance of Russian-European relations, and contributed to their development. >>>read more: Press release of June 2006
